Sciatica

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Harrisburg, PA

Had this about 4-5 years ago and resolved after 4-6 weeks. Recurred about two weeks ago but seems to fluctuate with my medications. When PD is good Sciatica is better. I know sciatica can accompany PD but wonder if the prognosis is any different or if there is treatment specific to this combination.

Pain is a common, but perhaps unexpected, non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). Up to 75 percent of people can experience some form of discomfort during the course of their disease. Unfortunately, this symptom is often under-recognized and therefore undertreated.

Sciatica pain is a common issue for people with Parkinson's disease. Here are some key points from the knowledge base:

- Description: The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back, runs through the buttocks, and continues down the leg. Pain associated with the sciatic nerve can be severe and debilitating.
- Experiences:
- One member described severe lower back pain and excruciating nerve pain extending down both legs, particularly at night. This was attributed to the degeneration of the lower spine combined with Parkinson's rigidity, creating a trapped nerve.
- Another member associated their sciatic nerve pain with dystonia, experiencing it in the mornings after a rough night's sleep.
- Some members found the pain severe enough to interfere with daily life, making it difficult to stand or walk.
