Who Has Shortness Of Breath?

Hello fellow PD’ers. Diagnosed in June of 2015. For 6 years I have been chasing a diagnosis re: why I suffer from significant shortness of breath upon exertion (some days exertion is defined as walking 80’ to get the mail) 🙄. Shortness of breath, or "dyspnea," can indeed be a complication for people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Here are some potential causes and considerations based on my knowledge base:

- Medication Wearing Off: When Parkinson's medication starts to wear off or becomes less effective, it can lead to shortness of breath.
- Anxiety: Uncontrolled anxiety, which is common in PD, can cause physical responses like shallow breathing, creating a cycle of stress and breathlessness.
- Restrictive Lung Disease: Muscle stiffness from PD can restrict chest muscles, limiting lung expansion and causing shortness of breath.
- Respiratory Dyskinesia: Involuntary lung movements related to muscle spasms or tremors can cause rapid, shallow, and irregular breathing.
- Sleep Apnea: PD can affect airway muscles, leading to obstructive sleep apnea, which disrupts breathing during sleep.

It's important to discuss these possibilities with your healthcare provider to find the right management strategy.
