Movement Disorder Specialist

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Elkins, WV

I had my first appointment Friday. He did some testing and said he’s not convinced I have Parkinson’s.
He said, just because I have a tremor it doesn’t mean I have Parkinson’s.
It’s been 2 years since my diagnosis and there hasn’t been any advancement in my Parkinson’s.
I have some of the symptoms but i can do things that people with Parkinson’s can’t do.
He ordered a mri of my lower back and the next appointment he wants me to come in without taking my morning meds.
Any thoughts?

I had trouble with falling and balance issues but I've never had tremors, other thank two brief episodes of internal tremors. But because I responded so well to the medication, and have continued to do so, she diagnosed me with Parkinson's Disease. I would discuss with your doctor any concerns you have and question their diagnosis. See if he or she can put your mind at ease.

I've had parkinson's for 21 years now and look I'm not being able to walk anymore my Parkinson's hasn't progressed at all so I really don't understand why your doctor is saying you don't have Parkinson's that's not necessarily true hoping for good results for you my prayers are with you ❤️ Julie Olson 359😄. Hug 🫂.

Two years without much progression isn't really that unusual, especially since you have young onset. Some people on this forum have said they had it for 10 or more years without a lot of progression. Enjoy it while it lasts! My husband is in his 80s and hasn't gotten a lot worse, except that he is a bit slower than he was when he was diagnosed 4 years ago. On a day to day basis, it isn't really a noticeable difference, but when I think back to what he was able to do then I can see it.

I highly recommend you get an appointment with an MDS (Movement Disorder Specialist). Everyone with PD should see this type of specialist but unfortunately there aren't many trained ...yet. Why? It requires an additional 2 years of training. The MDS's are highly educated to specifically treat PwP's (People with Parkinsons).

It's always good to get a SECOND opinion. Contact your state Parkinsons Association for references.
