Is There Someone Who Experiences Difficulty In Getting Up From A Chair And How Do You Deal With It?
I sit in a recliner and depending on how long I sit, I have increasing difficulty attempting to stand and begin walking.
I have a lift recliner chair. It helps as the back lifts up. It really isn't too much more costly than a good regular recliner and I recommend looking into it. I've also seen (on FB), pull-up rubber/ plastic loops that help a care-giver pull one up. It has 2 sets of loops w a rubber piece in between. It's shaped like a figure 8 and the ads make it look very useful. It looks like it would take the strain off both person's backs and be less awkward to use.
Re: getting out of bed, I have a half-bar that sticks up beside the top third of the bed. Its legs extend under the mattress, and on top of the springs so its quite stable. It's very useful when I want to roll over and for pulling myself to the edge of the bed. My bed is quite a way off the floor, so I have a 4" stool I step on to get in. I got it from Easy Comforts. It's for getting out of the tub, and you can stack them for or more height. The smooth top is easy on the bare feet and it sets flat so doesn't rock. I have a similar 4"stool that's specifically for getting in and out of the car. Is built for outside and is rougher so one doesn't slip.
Hope this helps someone. Have a good day and restful sleep tonite. 🙃
I found I use my arms more then anything. Of course I choose chiairs with High enough sides or arm rest to aid me doing so. The problem I have been experiencing is getting out of bed. I can't seem to stand without falling back into the bed? It's a struggle at times but I manage after a couple try's.
My husband has trouble getting out of his rocking recliner. I have him sit on the edge of the seat, he rocks back and forth, and on the count of three, he does a big bounce and almost jumps to his feet. I stand beside him and help him rock and give a little tug upward on three also. We do this getting out of any chair and off the commode also.
My husband has difficulties getting up from his recliner and other chairs as well. He is in LSVT as well as normal physical therapy. Due to he also has a diagnosis of orthostatic hypotension this causes him to have more challenges as his blood pressure drops too low now allowing him to rise safely. I do not know if you have be checked for orthostatic hypotension or not, but, it maybe an option just to ensure that isn't part of your issue too.
Sometimes a recliner is more challenging to get out of because the sear cushions tent to be deep, soft, and some recliners swivel or rock, these will make it more challenging to get out of them. Try getting some PT to help strengthen your legs to see if this helps you get up more easily. I also recommend that is you have a recliner that is too low to the ground you may have more difficulty getting out as the strength in your leg muscles are ot able to lift you correctly. Things like your glutes etc. Good luck
There are chairs that have a lift that can help you stand. Otherwise, PT can work with you on strengthening your leg muscles and learning to lean forward before standing up. The LSVT-Big exercises include one that has you go from sit to stand over and over.
