What Advice Are You Grateful To Share With Others About Parkinson’s?
Here's a sample from one caregiver for my wife, the PD patient. I hope it may help others.
1. We started an exercise program, 3 days a week, and I lead her through the sets (with small weights), walking on a treadmill, balance exercises. Started 4 months ago, and I have seen significant progress in her arm & leg strength, balance, energy levels, and sleeping. Still not "normal" but a big improvement. We gradually increase the reps on the exercises. Started at 6 and now at 29. Now a big part of our routines.
2. We experimented with taking her meds at different intervals, based on her first dose in the morning. Now, we set our phones for the same times every day. Much better! That soon became the routine, and now she rarely misses a dose. No little thing!
3. Her biggest pain now is in her face (jaws, ears, neck). It normally comes toward the end of the meds' effective "on" time--but not always. We have a "kit bag" of treatments (OTC meds, pain creams, heat pads), so we are managing now.
4. As a caregiver, I pray for patience, compassion, empathy, and wisdom. She has an illness; she didn't ask for it. When she is exhausted, I know she isn't "lazy". When she can't sleep at night, I know her sleep schedule is messed up. Her schedule is mine, now. We'll make it together and help for the LORD above.
Adapt, adapt, adapt! Use the incredible technology available to develop new interests and studies. Kick the 'victim' out of your brain and adapt. Read a book and discuss it with your Copilot (AI). I just finished IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME--yes, all 3,900+ pages on the Kindle, something I never would have done before PD.
If you've seen one patient with Parkinson’s, you've seen one patient with Parkinson’s... every one is different
Be patient... Parkinson's disease is long term, & you will need patience. I know that Parkinson's is all over the news, don't panic. Be patient while your Neurologist/MDS stabilize your medication. When I was diagnosed over 20 years ago, there was 1 medication, now there are many more. Yes, exercise & diet is important. In time you will figure out what works. What works for you may not work for another. Always be kind. Remember there is still a lot more life to live. God bless. Hugs, AnneKristine 🩷
Great job Earl…. I’m very much in favor of a gratitude journal…. Start each new day writing down at least 2 things you’re thankful for …. Our God is still on His throne and sees us all ❤️ merry Christmas to all!
