What Does Everyone Do To Stay Active If It Is Very Difficult To Do Things? Bad Balance And Terrible Back Pain! Affects How I Walk.

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have read about boxing but my reflexes are SO slow, I'm afraid it will kick back and hit me... I was diagnosed this past April. I suffer from poor balance (falls), slow jerky walking (using a cane already), freezing-getting stuck with movements. My left arm/hand is extremely slow. VERY Slow, soft speech, drooling, inconvenience and memory problems. About two months ago I started having severe burning back pain. VERY frustrating. My husband tries but he is overwhelmed. Hi Linda, I don’t do any specific exercises as I get plenty caring for my handicapped husband. I was diagnosed July 2023. I do use my four wheel walker several times aday. I race thru the house and sing, loudly! Not pretty, but makes me feel better. Can’t carry a tune! Dogs not happy! My legs and lower back only hurt on left side. I use two microwave pads and the heat really helps. One on my icy feet and one on my back. Maybe you should get a second opinion. My neurologist diagnosed my PD on my first visit. No tests other than his exam. I try to time my meds before going in an OFF time. I’m trying hard to live with this. My husband needs me!

My wife just started Rock Steady Boxing. They work with everybody, at your pace. It is not just boxing, they set up around 10 stations. They have a section that works on dexterity , they have stationary bikes and some other equipment. You rotate from station to station, with lots of volunteers at each station. Most places are probably similar, but this place is new and build just for this. Good luck to you.

It sounds like you're facing a lot of challenges, but it's great that painting brings you joy and helps you feel connected. For staying active with Parkinson’s, consider gentle exercises like tai chi, yoga, or seated exercises, which can improve balance and flexibility without straining your back. Dance or even rhythmic movements to music can also help with coordination and mood. Physical therapy might not have worked before, but a therapist specializing in Parkinson’s could tailor exercises to your needs. Always consult your doctor before starting new activities.
