Who Has Had A Knee Replacement With PD?

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Pitman, NJ

A study published in a prestigious medical journal revealed that a non-Parkinson's did well; another group with Parkinsons felt well with it for 3-4 months and then were sorry they had the surgery. Wonder if the first few months was a placebo effect.🤔

I am glad he is doing well; I exercised for so many years at the gym and had PT with the diagnosis that psychologically, I just don't want to do it anymore. I get by. I'm 77 and worked hard and kept going to school furthering 3 careers and kept house ; I had a very tolerant husband; he didn't want me to go to law school 3 nights a week and on Saturday, and work during the day, but when I graduated with honors, he was so proud. 😇

I was diagnosed with PD 20 yrs ago. 5 yrs ago I had my 1st total knee replacement, and 5 months ago I had my 2nd one done. I had no trouble with the anesthesia and PT helped a lot, but I am still in a great deal of pain daily which the Drs attribute to a sore IT band. But I wonder if that's really what's going on. The pain level is so extreme that sometimes cannot sleep or anything! I wonder about the effect the PD has on everything I've gone through.

PS I walk on it carefully, but I hate the snap, crackle, pop and can feel it. My rheumatologist prescribed 20mg of Prednisone which has helped about 30%; not too much, but better than before, but better. I am at my kitchen sink in the morning and yell at it to stop, like a knee can understand 🙃.

I fall into the second category you mentioned.
I didn’t know I had Parkinson’s when I had my knee replacement! (2018)
The surgery was difficult and I had some problems
With anesthesia causing psychosis , but
I bounced back fairly quickly and had a great recovery ‘
But that only lasted about 6-8 months. Then the ankle on my knee repaired leg started pulling and my Achilles tendon tore so Ihad surgery on my ankle.
Then I never really recovered from the ankle surgery. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease about 6 months after the Achilles repair!
It turns out I have dystonia in that leg..so I am pretty sure that it was all related to my Parkinson’s .. i probably would not have the knee replacement again!

My husband had a knee replacement in 2008. He wasn't diagnosed with PD until 2019. He did have problems with the TKR. At this point, he's okay with it, but there were several years where he did wonder if he did the right thing in having the surgery. His knee would swell and there was still a lot of pain. But he was still hiking and backpacking and we thought he had just overdone things too soon after the surgery.
