How Do You Manage Elevating Changes In Blood Pressure?

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Farmington, NM

Hi, friends. Ray and I have been having a couple of very frustrating months. His blood pressure is increasing again and is difficult to manage. He has ischemic heart disease and stage 2 kidney disease in addition to early stage PD. We practice an extremely heart healthy diet along with an energetic exercise regimen. He has been on the maximum dose of 10mg of amlodipine for the past year, increased from 5mg last year when a similar problem with unstable hypertension occurred. We are now splitting… read more

Thank you, Rose. Your response is much appreciated. We intend to circle back with the cardiologist on Monday.

Hi Terri I to have the same problem. Most days I’m ok but then my blood pressure spikes to 176/106. I just take an extra aomlodpine 10 mg. I’m at stage 3 kidney disease. But I also have a leaky valve going out of my heart. I just had that rechecked and I’m leaking a lot of blood now. You really need to talk to your doctor as I have not heard back from my heart Doctor. This is a very important thing we both need to address with our doctors. God be with your husband and myself as I’m getting some pain with mine. Hugs

Managing blood pressure in someone with Parkinson's disease (PD), ischemic heart disease, and stage 2 kidney disease can be complex. Here are some considerations based on my knowledge base:

Medications:
- Amlodipine: You mentioned Ray is on the maximum dose of 10mg, split into two 5mg doses. This is a common approach to manage blood pressure.
- Clonidine: Used as needed for high spikes, which is a typical strategy for managing acute hypertension.

Lifestyle:
- Heart-Healthy Diet: Continue with this, as it is beneficial for overall cardiovascular health.
- Exercise Regimen: Maintaining an energetic exercise routine is excellent for managing blood pressure and overall health.

Additional Strategies:
- Calcium Channel Blockers: These are sometimes used to slow the progress of Parkinson's and may have an impact on blood pressure.
- Immune System Modulation: Researchers are exploring ways to modulate the immune system's effects in Parkinson's, which might indirectly affect blood pressure.

New Treatments:
- Renal Denervation: This is a newer FDA-approved procedure for resistant hypertension. It involves disrupting the nerves in the renal arteries to lower blood pressure. Discuss this option with Ray's healthcare provider to see if it's suitable for his condition.

Herbalism:
- Herbal Remedies: While some people explore herbalism, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any herbal treatments, as they can interact with existing medications and conditions.

Monitoring:
- Regular Monitoring: Continue to monitor Ray's blood pressure daily and keep a log to share with his healthcare provider.

Consultation:
- Healthcare Provider: Always consult with Ray's cardiologist and nephrologist to tailor the treatment plan to his specific needs, considering his complex medical history.

Me to as it looked like a lot of blood was going through. They do make valves just for this problem. I just never look forward to more surgery though. Hugs

P.S. I hope they can do something about your leaky valve. That sounds serious. Sending hugs.
