Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are a class of antidepressant drugs that are used early in the course of Parkinson’s disease. They work by preventing the breakdown of dopamine in the brain, thereby increasing the amount of dopamine available. MAOIs can be somewhat effective at treating Parkinson’s symptoms and may help protect the brain and slow the progress of the disease. Examples of MAOIs include:

- Azilect (Rasagiline)
- Xadago (Safinamide)
- Selegiline (sold under the brand names Eldepryl and Zelapar)

However, MAOIs can worsen side effects caused by Levodopa. Always consult your doctor for personalized advice.
