,I Have Had PD For 20 Years And I Am In The Process Of Getting Evaluated For DBS? I Don't Have Tremors But Am Very Stiff And Had Very Bad

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question đź’

Dyskinesia until my Sinemet was recently reduced. Will DBS improve my quality of life or will it just get me off meds . I have had many back surgeries and anxiety and this also can be a contributor to my problems. Has anyone had DBS at Mt. Sinai in NYC? My surgeon does the procedure under anesthesia. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

It sounds like you're undergoing evaluation for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for your Parkinson's Disease (PD). Here are some key points about DBS based on your knowledge base:

- Candidate Evaluation: Extensive testing, including MRI and CT scans, will be performed to determine if you are a good candidate for DBS. This ensures maximum benefit and minimal disruption to normal brain function.
- Surgical Process:
- First Surgery: Involves implanting electrodes in the brain and a neurostimulator near the collarbone. This surgery is done while you are awake and takes 3-6 hours.
- Second Surgery: About a week later, a pulse generator is placed on your chest wall under general anesthesia. This surgery usually requires less than 24 hours in the hospital.
- Recovery: Post-surgery, you will need to take antibiotics to prevent infection and avoid strenuous activities for 4-6 weeks.
- Activation: After a few weeks, your neurologist will program and activate the DBS system. It may take up to six months to adjust the settings for optimal benefits.
- Outcomes: DBS can significantly improve motor symptoms for more than 70% of people with PD, though it is not a cure.

Always consult your neurologist for personalized advice and to address any concerns you may have.
