Career Change After Parkinson’s?

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
El Cerrito, CA

I was high functioning type A personality attorney employed by the Department of Justice for most of my legal career until my Parkinson’s deficits began impacting my ability to perform at a professional level. Now that I have limited typing abilities with the assistance of physical therapy and my speaking voice can be heard by others including dictation by a computer thanks to computer technology with the assistance of a speech therapist, my desire is to “launch” a second career as a writer. Thank all of you for your support! It means a lot to me! With out saying, all of you will be acknowledged in my preface, and I will let everybody know where my book signings will occur. “Wishful thinking!” 🤣

I agree Danial. I'm all for doing all you can for as long as you can, safely. I also believe that you lose it if you don't use it. I would like your first edition signed book James so get writing please.

There’s no limit to what you can do and tons of resources for help or tools to do it with!
I retired from teaching in the public school system after 41 years and unretired the day after I got my diagnosis. I fell my first on the new job🤦🏻‍♀️ but decided to not let that deter me from doing what I can, the best I can, for as long as I can. I also play the violin and I have incorporated music into my job. It’s therapeutic for both the youth and for me. I think if I stopped working, moving and doing the things I love, I might wither away 🤷🏻‍♀️. It’s not easy; some days are better than others but each day is a blessing 🙌🏻🙏🫂

Greg and Maria? Love your support. ! You two are gifts from heaven! Since I began visiting this forum these last month or two, I have moved from sitting on the balcony “zonked out” on my pych and Parkinson’s meds listening to “Reggae “ music, and now, I’m trying to get of myself. I need more than exercise. Also, to many nap! I did find out that UBER is wheelchair “friendly” meaning that now I can volunteer at Berkeley Law at their legal aid clinic. That’s going to be a “trip” since I graduated from that same law school, when it was it was called “Boalt Hall.” in 1979! Despite all the increasing deficits, I now can keep Parkinson’s at bay with positivity because I’m not alone! All my loved ones, here and abroad want to treat me as an invalid. They are not doing anything wrong. It’s a natural response to the unknown. Some of them are accessing the podcasts made available by some of the Parkinson’s foundations.
I have to sign off now. My fingers and voice are disconnecting from my IPAD. 🍎 Thanks for listening!
