Waking up in the middle of the night coughing could be related to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is common in people with Parkinson's disease. OSA occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat relax, partially or completely blocking the airways, leading to disrupted sleep. Symptoms of OSA include:

- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Loud snoring
- Abrupt awakening with gasping or choking
- Dry mouth upon waking
- Morning headaches
- Difficulty focusing or concentrating
- Mood changes such as depression, anxiety, or irritability

It's important to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare provider, who may recommend a sleep study to diagnose the issue and suggest appropriate treatments, such as a CPAP machine to help maintain open airways.
