Anyone Else Experiencing Extreme S Daytime Sleepiness?

Diagnosed with REM sleep disorder. Wears Bipap when I can get him to wear it. Tried many sleep aids to help at night to no avail.

Yes, I was getting very tired after lunch. My neurologist told me to have a low-carb lunch and save it until evening. That has worked, but I find that after about 3 pm I become very fatigued. This time the doctor has suggested 30-60 minutes cardio exercise per day (I have submitted a question about this). But, basically, I feel pretty unable to do much after about 3-4 pm.

My hubby has REM sleep disorder. He has had it for decades but no one diagnosed it until he was diagnosed with PD in 2012 and I started my research. He was initially put on Tramadol which managed it by knocking him out. Over the years due to many medication adjustments and changes, he has stopped Tramadol. He is now on Klonopin which he takes at night and it also controls his REM. Go figure....every day is a new day and my hubby reacts to meds in very unique ways! We also used Melatonin for awhile which helped him to fall asleep...can't say it helped with the REM disorder though.

Hope he (and you) can find some relief. Living with REM is exhausting...and can be dangerous. Prayers for you both!

I would love to have a nape during the day. But I probably never sleep if I did not use meds. I go to bed around 6:00-7:00 and then I am up at 2:00-2:30 am! Everyday! But that schedule seems to work best since I can get 6-7 hours sleep. Still I may wake at 10-12-1, but I get more sleep this way. I do get tired toward the end of day, say 2-3 but I stay fairly active through the day.
Good luck to you, many blessings

One reason us with PD don't sleep well is one needs dopamine in order to go from stage 4 (deep sleep) to REM sleep (dreaming). We tend to wake up every 2-3 hours. One solution to this problem is to take carbo-dopa- leva-dopa at night before bed time....what this medication does is supply the needed "dopamine"so you can go through the complete sleep cycle ---stages 1-4 and REM sleep. If you are already on carba-leva take one before bed and check it out for yourself. I now take an extended release carba-leva at bedtime, and I sleep between 6-7 hours per night, before doing this I could only sleep 2-3 hours at a time!!!!

Kathy. You are so right. This disorder is a precursor to Parkinson’s. Gary has fought in his sleep for years. Any of the typical treatments for this made him worse. Currently trazadone and using his bipap have helped enormously. I usually go to bed with him and read until he’s asleep. Sleep in another bed. Working for us right now. Good luck.
