Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common issue for those with Parkinson's disease. It can be caused by chronic insomnia and can make getting through the day challenging. EDS may increase the risk of accidents during tasks like driving. It can also lead to cognitive decline, as sleep disturbances and cognitive problems in Parkinson's disease appear to be bidirectional.

For more details, you can refer to the following points from the knowledge base:
- Fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness: Chronic insomnia can lead to EDS, making daily activities difficult.
- Increased risk of accidents: EDS can put individuals at risk during activities like driving.
- Cognitive decline: There is a bidirectional relationship between cognitive problems and insomnia in Parkinson's disease.

To describe yesterday will be my typical response:
1. Fell asleep while my husband and I were praying in the morning.
2. Fell asleep while watching the news (no comment necessary).
3. Fell asleep while on the computer (entering info for this site).
4. Fell asleep while reading.
5. Fell asleep at bedtime.

How do I attempt to manage this: I make sure I am seated in a safe place where a fall won't be dangerous. When I fall asleep, it only lasts for about one (1) minute. The exception is my bed (for which I now have bars; past history = 4-5 falls from bed within the last three (3) years = head laceration, 5 fx ribs, concussion, bruising on numerous parts of my body, as well as a wounded pride.
