What Do I Do When People Say You Are Using Parkinsons As An Excuse?

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have to continue working part-time because Disability does not cover the costs of living. I know many jobs and he uses me everywhere. If someone misses work I do my job and theirs. Many times it's 2 other jobs. Today he wanted me to pop his back, both myself and coworker said no. When I reminded him he said I just use PD and Fibromyalgia as an excuse. I know it's because I push myself til I collapse, in a corner where Noone sees
He doesn't pay me a lot because there's just so much I can make.… read more

Ask him what's his excuse for being an insensitive jackass! Then tell him that his request is NOT part of your job description. If he terminates you, sue him for disability discrimination.

I haven't had anyone say anything like that to me YET, but I'm ready with a snappy retort if anyone ever does.

My husband has been gone 22 years. People tell me they get annoyed because their husbands don't do enough to help or like Chomp on Ice which annoys them. I say someday you'll miss them

Sounds like he is taking advantage of his workers. No one should be expected to pop their bosses back under any circumstances. Do your job ignore his uncaring remarks. Karma will play out. Hang in there.

Hi. First of all, you are not a useless woman! It's normal to feel bad in terms of the weight on your care partner, but you are NOT useless! Everyone ages and changes. People get sick. People get conditions like PD. That's why marriage vows contain the phrase "in sickness and in health." Anyway, I agree with the others above -- your boss is WRONG and OUT OF LINE to request that you "pop his back"-- my God no one should be touching anyone else in the workplace, especially employee/boss for any reason! He says things like this to manipulative and intimidate you. Can't imagine why he doesn't realize that you CAN sue him for disability discrimination if he fires you for refusing such an outlandish request. Even though you need money, you sound so stressed. Where there is a will, there is a way to get help with expenses/cut back on expenses. Your husband just has to step up and/or you have to figure out how to go without. I worked myself to the bone for decades. Your husband can do it, too, if necessary.

I am so sorry that you have to work in this environment. When I was first diagnosed, a whole lot of people said, "are you sure you have Parkinson's?" and "you don't look like you are sick." That is so insulting to me. This disease is SO misunderstood and everyone with PD has a variety of symptoms. I will pray for you.
