Closing Eyes When Walking?

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Isle of Wight,

When I am out walking I occasionally find I have closed my eyes and walk several yards with them closed. Obviously I do have some sense and it only happens ( so far ) when the path in front of me is clear.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member No not anymore. I had so many embarrassing moments occurred so it has to stop and learned what causes it. . It was certainly my last dozing off while talking on the phone.

Two weeks ago I started taking a small pill that i have to put under my tounge 30 minutes before my bedtime.
Since then I had slept from 7 to 8 hours at the least every night. I even can go back to sleep when I wake up at 2AM to pee and I'm grateful for that.

According to my family being a type 2 diabetic sleeping or dozing after you eat causes it because that's the time your blood sugar spikes up. Especially diabetes is in our bloodline.

Plus I have deprived sleep problem. I only slept 3 to 4 hours most of the nights.

So in order to recover from my sleep deprivation I exercise to help lower my blood sugar and I tried my best to stay away on sweets and baked goods made with simple sugar and white flour and everything that's bad for a diabetic like me.

I'm happy I'm on that road to eating healthy and keep active and exercise because it helps a lot also delaying the progression of PD in my opinion by the way because I see it and feel it.

Take care

It is quite amazing how many people have their own ways of coping with PD problems. This is something I have not experienced as yet, but, having read how you all cope, it is not something I fear.
That is the beauty of this site - we can learn so much from others' experience that we are forewarned and therefore less afraid.

Thank you so much for sharing what happens - it is such a comfort to know we are not alone.

Yours

Audrey

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, I answered this earlier this evening but hit the wrong button and erased it. ARGH!
I have what the doctor calls "mini-sleeps"; I can doze off for just 2 or 3 seconds even walking. Because PD affects the muscles around the eyes, I wonder if brighter light makes it hard for your muscles to keep your eyes open. Apparently that's the problem with mine, except because I'm so fatigued I tend to doze momentarily. I have periodic problems with focus and depth perception but not constantly. I guess as long as I don't stay asleep....

Honestly, I would be afraid to keep my eyes closed for too long as my balance is far worse when my eyes are closed.
