Yesterday my husband, diagnosed 3 years ago, now in a wheel chair and nursing home (age 67), told me and showed me that his mouth is slightly crooked now,, doesn't have quite the same shape and that he experiences throat inhalations that affect how his mouth is dry.

Honestly, I had not noticed it specially in his appearance but when he mentioned it, I see it and I wonder if it is the beginning of the 'mask' face I have read about.

I asked him if he thought Biotene in his mouth or an emollient… read more

I can’t speak for the mask face component of your question, but my mom has had dry mouth for a while and we were recently warned by her dentist that it may lead to a number of issues like gum disease and cavities. I’d get the biotene ASAP.

Parkinson's disease (PD) can significantly affect mouth movements and feelings. Here are some key points:

- Speech Problems:
- Speaking quietly
- Having a monotone voice
- Stuttering, stammering, or mumbling
- Slurring words

- Swallowing Problems:
- Difficulty swallowing, which can range from mild (taking longer to eat) to severe (choking).

These issues arise because PD affects the nervous system, impacting the nerves and muscles used for speech and swallowing.

MollyMolendyke, thank you for the dentist tip. He goes for a cleaning Aug 30 and I'll tell him to ask about it. I got the Biotene Gel. Is that what your mother uses?

Parkdust, Yes he takes Carbidopa/Levodopa Sinemet. My husband has bipolar disease so I understand there are some PD meds he cannot take. I will ask about the amantadine. Thank you for your response. Those symptoms you listed are almost identical to the ones he told me about.
