Good Places For Parkies To Live

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Green Valley, AZ

I live alone and, although I don't have any stairs, there are other challenges. I have been simplifying my environment for the past couple of years, but I am thinking seriously about whether I need to move. I live in a rural town that is about 45 minutes from the nearest suburb. There is not really any support for people with PD here and it will be hard to get around when I can no longer drive. But living in the city is so stressful for me, I'm not sure what I should do.

Do you like where you… read more

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member Sorry I have been offline. I think they do. they moved there 10 or more years ago. Their 3 boys live in that general area might be the reason. He is retired military and met his wife there.

I am in the same spot as you,Cereus. I am 68 and live in small town Louisiana. Weather is mild in winter and hot in summer. As far as support for PD patients.. none that I have found. . I have looked into assisted living and it was $4,000/month. which is out f my reach I can't live alone or in a regular apt because with PD, I am too weak to handle housework, shopping, etc. I have no children. The best I found is a apt. complex called "Housing for the Elderly" My sister lives there, It is on outskirts of town, across from the hospital. It is an efficiency apt and the rent is based on one's income. They have a van to take residents to get groceries and dr, appointments. for this small rural community it is my best choice. These apts are federally funded. No keeping up a house or yard either. I am presently living with a widower friend (I am a widow of 23 years) but he had a bad stroke last year and needs a caregiver which I cannot be since I am at that point almost myself. This is his house and I will not be able to live here by myself. His daughter lives here and cares for him and does all the housekeeping and cooking and shopping. Good Luclk in your search. It is good that you are starting early thinking about the future.

My oldest brother lives in Commerce, CO. outside of Denver. He and his wife retired there and bought a condo.

Thanks so much for your response @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member.

Yes, I see we are in similar situations. My town is very, very small and there is no hospital or anything like that here. I have considered subsidized housing, but since to take advantage of that I will have to move away anyway (there is none here), I thought I'd see if anyone felt their town was an especially PD friendly place to live. I have also sent a message to the Davis Phinney Foundation to see if they have any resources to help.

I'm glad there is a place you can go that supplies transportation and that your sister lives there. You will not be alone if you decide to take up residence in the complex. And once you are there, you can campaign to change the name to something brighter and more welcoming!

I would like to find a place that provides a little garden plot for each resident. A friend's mother lives in such a place in Denver.

Best of luck to you.
