Anyone Tried Mucuna Puriens??
Anyone tried Mucuna Pruriens ? What were your thoughts and impressions of it as a substitute for carbidopa/levodopa? Any information you can share would be useful!
@elizabethwillis,
Yes and yes. I just got IT YESTERDAY from AMAZON, so I I don't know whether it works or not. I'm on no meds, very weak, shaky, falling-- so I thought I'd give it a shot. Not sure how many tablets to take , And I'm in between specialists so I
I don't know what or who to call but everyone on here says check with your doctor
Thanks Elizabeth for asking this question and thanks MikeL for your thoughtful response. I found the following article on the NIH website provided.

Here is there summary.Conclusions
Mucuna pruriens is an exceptional plant. On the one hand it is a good source of food, as it is rich in crude protein, essential fatty acids, starch content, and certain essential amino acids. On the other hand, it also contains various anti-nutritional factors, such as protease inhibitors, total phenolics, oligosaccharides (raffinose, stachyose, verbascose), and some cyclitols with anti-diabetic effects. In fact, all parts of the Mucuna plant possess medicinal properties. The main phenolic compound is L-dopa (5%), and M. pruriens seeds contain some components that are able to inhibit snake venom. In addition, methanolic extracts of M. pruriens leaves have demonstrated anti-microbial and anti-oxidant activities in the presence of bioactive compounds such as phenols, polyphenols and tannins, and preliminary studies on keratinocytes support its possible topical usage to treat redox-driven skin diseases. Collectively, the studies cited in this review suggest that this plant and its extracts may be of therapeutic value with regard to several pathologies, although further work is needed to investigate in more detail the mechanisms underlying the pharmacological activities of MP.
I didn't find any more current or thorough studies but it seems to me that this plant's nutritional value would be gained through the gut and that the slow uptake in the gut of many folks with PD is slower, the effect of this nutrient would also be effected. Just my thought.
Please check wit your doctor for more info on its potential benefits and effect of the dosing of carbodopa.
Hope this was helpful, Maria
I tried it with my sinemet because I read and still believe it’s safe to mix. That being said, I didn’t realize at the time that sinemet is converted to dopamine in your system and the carbidopa carries it through the bb barrier. Mucuna contains real dopamine and it also locks onto, and is carried by the carbidoba in sinemet. I was later told this can make the mucuna 3 times stronger. So, me being the mental giant that I am, mixed my dose of mucuna with my c/l and drank it down. And for the next side effect free few hours I moved at 4 times my normal speed, talked faster, walked faster, even ran up and down the stairs with no effort. I did some stuff around the house I hadn’t done for months, even having a quick walk around the block. I couldn’t believe my good fortune, I was cured. This was around 10:30am. By around 3 pm my “cure” had worn off. I tried mixing in some Mucuna again but this time nothing other than I normally felt when just taking my meds. I wasn’t able to speak to my neurologist but I spoke to my doctor who advised me not to try that again. I was told I probably over taxed my dopamine receptors. The rest of the day I felt fairly normal on my meds, but the next day I could barely get out of bed. To say I was exhausted was an understatement. Even laying around was an effort. Took my normal doses of sinemet but still felt like I ran a few marathons back to back. I’ve tried mixing smaller doses a couple of times since then but haven’t had the results I got that first time on just my normal meds. I did text someone who uses Mucuna but they just use it with a carbidopa pill itself. I was told if you mix it with carb start small and work up. The last time I tried it was about a month ago. I’d have no problem trying it again, but haven’t seen a tried and true formula without taking large doses and that could bring side effects I don’t want.
Do you buy it from Amazon? Should I check with my Dr first?
Yes I have used it. I feel it works faster and lasts longer. Thinking about buying in bulk
