Does Anyone Have Tips For Working Out At Gym?

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Orange, CA

I have found many of the machines available for use at my gym difficult to use due to grip/tremor issues. I would love to hear from others ways they have adapted their gym machine workouts to accommodate their changing and evolving physical limitations.

exercise is all important but you don't have to go to the gym to do it.Yesterday I went to manhattan for a flu shot, lunch with friends and a visit to a few galleries. my advice for working out? Don't overdo it. try to go with a friend.every thing #pdv said is spot on. my local y has adult aerobics. water supports as we take baby steps. i have also adult chair aerobics. my insurance offers the silver sneakers program.I have to use a walker for support. moving around with the walker also works my shoulders. when i get home i feel shot. n.b.be very careful around the pool. don't take hot showers.i went to the mjf symposium a few weeks back,be considerate ofyour caregiver. think about them. there were maybe 1,000 pd suffers at the event. some couldn't eat but needed to be fed. bathroom break was a riot. im letting compasion overwhelm my cynicism.

There's a lot of ways to workout, lap swimming gives you strength and cardio. Recumbent bikes are safe and some have moving handlebars. I think keeping moving is the most important thing we do. Good luck. Paul.

When I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s my neurologist gave me a prescription for Sinemet and told me to do 30 minutes of aerobics daily. He said it was the same as the prescription and I shouldn’t be wimpy but I should sweat. So…variety is great. I do go to the gym sometimes and I do use the weights but I do that because I have osteopenia.

@Talk with or schedule with a trainer or a physical therapist, they often have ways to compensate for the varying problems people have with their bodies. They can be most helpful. Although, some trainers do not seem to know much but others do. Ask around.
