I would never even think of having DBS. Out of the three people I know that had it one died, one got an infection which necessitated the removal of all the hardware. Sounds like fun. And the other became mentally impaired. Not only that it does not take care of the autonomic nervous system problems like those that exist in the GI tract. It basically treats tremors. Not good enough for the risk.

There is a new procedure that was recently approved by the FDA. It's called NEURAVIVE. It is a non-invasive procedure using ultrasound. You might go online for more information. It might be helpful for you.

I take a dozen Sinemet 25 /100 tablets a day. I also take several other extended release medications for Parkinson’s. I also take arthritis, neuropathy, blood pressure, and cholesterol medication. It's a cocktail of 21 pills a day, but for the most part, they currently keep my symptoms in check. It's not a prefect system or exact science, it's riddled with occassional periods here and there when
symptoms return on the edges of my on/off cycles.
In my situation, it seems like stress (both mental or physical) increases the intensity of my symptoms. I feel it is directly responsible for the occassional periods when I notice the effectiveness of the medication wearing off faster than normal.
I'm retired and basically live for the most part, a stress-free life, but there are many stressful situations that are beyond control. For instance, being too hot, fatigued, sick, unexpected events, etc... can all cause stressful moments.
It's difficult to say that I would not have DBS surgery. First off, you have to meet certain criteria before the surgery is even an option. It's a major risk surgery, especially for elderly people. You don't just say hey I have a few symptoms of Parkinson's, I think I'll have DBS surgery. Typically, your symptoms have to be severe and uncontrollable with medication.
I currently do not fit into the DBS candidate category. If I did, then I would difinitely consider having the surgery. That being said, I would not consider having the surgery until it was my only option. I'm hoping I never face that decision.
