@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member. My husband has had two surgeries for a broken wrist since April 15th of this year. I've not noticed any significant cognitive changes. Years ago though, we did notice that whenever his mother had anesthesia her mind deteriorated further. She did not have PD though.

There are special concerns when it comes to surgery for a person with Parkinson's. There are some anesthesia methods that are not recommended. There are also medication that may be given after surgery that can cause issues.

I have read remarks by some that haldol aka haloperidol was especially problematic when give to a Parkinson's patient after surgery. That said I am actually aware of two instances where this drug caused lasting problems in two people who did not have Parkinson's. It is important to find out what the hospital plans to give the patient following surgery to be sure that no drugs are planned for someone with Parkinson's. The practitioner would probably be able to figure out something that would work better and not cause so many problems.
"Drugs to avoid in Parkinson's
Some drugs can bring on Parkinson’s-like symptoms or react badly with Parkinson’s drugs and should be avoided unless they’re recommended by a specialist.

These are some (but not all) of the drugs to avoid in Parkinson’s:

chlorpromazine (Largactil)
fluphenazine (Modecate)
perphenazine (Fentazin/Triptafen)
trifluoperazine (Stelazine)
flupentixol (Fluanxol/Depixol)
haloperidol (Serenace/Haldol)
metoclopramide (Maxalon)
prochlorperazine (Stemetil) "

I feel like someone is reading my mind. My husband had surgery 9 weeks ago. Spent 8 weeks of that in hospital and rehab. Not for his back but for his PD To cut a lo ng story short is opetation was 9 hours on his back. His duodopa was stopped for that period of time. He is totally diffrent person. Its like he can't comprehend anymore. He can't use his cutlery, can't do what he used to. Conversation is non existent. Can't get off chair or toilet without assistance.have had to get a carer in to help in the mornings. Sleeps nearly all day. Dont know if I'm coming or going. Its maddening. Been told to put him in facility. I dont know what to do.

I guess anything is possible but don't think so. I believe it came from being put to sleep three times in two months. Third time is when all this started
