Did Anyone Catch The Televised LIVE DBS BRAIN SURGERY On National Geographic Last Night 10-25-2015?

DBS Procedure performed live on TV. Showed one man's experience with severe PD tremors undergoing a successful DBS surgical proceedure, while awake, but sedated & able to communicate during placement of electrodes into the right & left side of his brain. PRETTY AMAZING & VERY INFORMATIVE.

I had DBS surgery in 2010. It is mind over matter. I was so desperate to have help for my severe on/off from meds that I couldn't wait. Having the halo on was somewhat of a challenge, but I was sitting on the bed after they put it on joking with my family, so it wasn't that bad. I have a picture of me with my halo on but I will spare you from seeing that picture. In the actual surgery, I felt some tugging and could tell they were doing stuff, plus I could hear the brain noise they need to listen to. The brain has no pain sensors, so it doesn't hurt. It was kind of a neat experience depending on your attitude and motivation going into the operation. And for me it has given me my life back. No more on/off, no muscle cramps, tightness, or dyskinesia. I am fortunate I never did have tremors. The main things I deal with now are poor speech, fatigue, and my handwriting is gone.

I have been told that they can now do the surgery with the patient asleep, so you could check into that. The main thing is to go to a surgeon who has done lots of DBS operations and they need to do thorough testing to make sure you have a good chance of success. Best wishes.

I didn't catch the program on DBS, but had DBS done in June. It is terrific.. I was asleep during most of the procedure. Never saw the cage. I didn't have tremors, but could not function without my 6 doses of Stalevo and leva/carba and azilect. Am now on Rytary which is a timed release version. It does not have the sharp wearing offs of stalevo. Of course, DBS is not for everyone, but it is certainly worth checking out if you are a candidate.

Yes, we watched that show. I have had DBS and it has made all the difference in my life. Not everyone has the success I have had, so I am blessed. That show was very realistic as to my experience.

We watched it and I found it to be extremely informative. It wasn't advertised very well, so I imagine many people who would have liked to see it missed out. What a comfort to know that there is something out there that can help those with PD.
