How Effective Is DBS
I have had a positive experience with DBS. My tremors were at stage 4, in order words, the were uncontrollable. The surgery stopped my hands. A BIG relief! My legs have slowed down but not stopped. This bothers me,but I can deal with it. Very happy with results and would recommend it.
Stevedemeter, I had my first DBS implanted in Aug '21 to the left side of my brain 🧠because my shaking was worse on my right side. During the surgery the nurse had to hold my R leg down since it was jumping so badly! (I hadn't taken any C/L for 2 days prior to the surgery.) When the surgeon turned the DBS on, my leg went still … I teared up 🥹 because I was so relieved. My R implant was placed 3 months later with the same great results. I immediately cut my meds from 2-3 pills 3x/day to 1/2 pill 3x/day. I got my handwriting back(!!) and my shaking continues to be very minimal. I know the PD is continuing to progress: I have issues with my balance, am slowly having more difficulty swallowing, etc., but the control of my shaking that this device provides has been such a blessing for me. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to have a respite from this symptom!
Stevedemeter I had my first DBS placed in the L side of my brain 🧠in August 2021, not 2024, though the results were, indeed, immediate on the R side of my body. As my PD continues to advance, the DBS will eventually reach a point where it can no longer control my advancing tremors and they will start to break through. At that point I will take more medication until it no longer works either. My DBS works well for now though, and I am very grateful!
Thanks Rachel and Debbie. It is heartening to hear that it has worked on real people and not just some statistics in a study
Well, thank God for the DBS surgery, I would do it again, in a heart beat. I have NEVER BEEN SORRY I did it
