When I was diagnosed in 2004, Clonazepam was the "go-to" Rx for anxiety, but it is a Benzodiazepine, or highly addictive. Hydroxyzine was originally prescribed as an antihistamine, but today it is prescribed for anxiety. I was prescribed Mirtazapine, an antidepressant, to assist with insomnia. I took a half pill each night with my last C/L, & it did help me sleep a little more. However, once I found out it was from the family of antidepressants, I stopped taking it immediately. I am not "depressed", & I do not like the side effects from taking an antidepressant. Do not get me wrong! In the early 90's, I was acutely depressed, & my psychiatrist prescribed, & I did take an antidepressant. It helped me immensely, & I lived with it's side effects the best I could. In 2004, the only form of dopamine was Sinemet, (C/L is the generic form), there was absolutely nothing else for my MDS to prescribe for my PD. It took a trial period to adjust the dosage, but it has worked very well for me over 20+ years. Of course, my dosage has had to be increased, & timing adjusted, but my MDS has not found it necessary to introduce any of the more recent PD medications. (Knock on wood!) Today, when my family MD, or one of my many specialists, want to prescribe a new Rx, I become a "demon". I do all the research available on the medication, & then decide if it is reasonable for me to take it. My GP has asked me to take a "statin" Rx, but my cardiologist told me, "No!" "It is your body, & know the drug, before you take it. Don't take medication just b/c you are told to do so." This is my "new" found attitude. However, it is not easy telling a doctor, "No!", because of the false narrative, "the doctor always knows best." In my opinion, a good doctor will respect your decision even though they disagree. Folks...as you can see there are a lot of suggestions as there are medications...that being said it is very important that you work with your Doctor, either her Neurologist or your
Personal Physicians... are the ones who can prescribe your medications and follow up to see how you are doing...🤠

Osiyo Patricia! My Psychiatrist, whom I have been seeing for several years has diagnosed me with MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) and also GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder). I have been on several different antidepressants which have worked for some time and then the MDD gets worse and we change meds. I am currently taking Trintellix 20mg every evening and it is helping for now. As for the GAD I have been taking Buspirone 30mg twice daily for several years. It has helped control the Panic Attacks for sure! I did have several falls back in March 2024 that it turns out was due to a drug-drug interaction between the Primidone that I was taking twice daily for my tremors and which I asked my PCP to increase to three times daily and two anti hypertension meds. The Hospitalist stopped one and cut the other daily dose in half. Problem resolved- no more falls recently. I still have chronic dizziness and take Meclizine 25mg once daily routinely and can take up to three times daily as needed. The unsteady gate and balance issues are an ongoing problem which my Physical Therapist recommended to my PCP that I be changed from the Hurricane 🌀 walking stick to a Rollator walker which I have been using for the last 2 months and it has helped. I am scheduled to see my new Neurologist (a Movement Disorder Specialist) in early November for the second time. And so my Parkinsonism journey continues…. Hope this long story is somewhat helpful! God Bless your journey as well! 🙂
