When Can I Get DBS? At What Stage? Why Wait?

If you are a candidate for DBS I'd suggest not waiting, I didn't and I've been very glad . I had DBS about 8 yrs ago not because my PD was debilitating it just sucked to struggle with zippers and have a tremor much of the time. My DBS surgery was so successful most of the time I am not aware of any PD symptoms.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is typically considered for individuals with Parkinson's disease when:

- Motor symptoms are debilitating and cannot be controlled with medications
- Side effects from medications are severe.
- Cognitive function is intact.

- The individual is healthy enough to undergo three to six hours of surgery while awake.

Why Wait?
- Extensive testing, including MRI and CT scans, is required to ensure maximum benefit and avoid disruptions of normal brain function.
- It may take up to six months of adjusting DBS settings to experience benefits.

Always consult with your neurologist to determine the right timing for DBS.
