My Husband Has Parkinson's. As A Caregiver, How Do I Handle It When He Is Having Hallucinations That Have Just Started.
I feel he is also starting with dementia in the last 6 months.
Sorry to hear that your husband is experiencing hallucinations Susan French. My hubby has had them for a long time. Often they are "small animal / dark images" on his peripheral, others are large and unpleasant. Most of them he recognizes as a hallucination and he can make them go away. We have discussed with hus medical team and agree not to try any medication at this time.
He has had a couple episodes in which he had very scary and resl-like hallucinations. In both situations, he was gave reactions to medication and we had to change meds. I would acknowledge he was experiencing something scary and just be there until it passed. Trying to discount what they are experiencing can increase the anxiety and fear.
Are the hallucinations bothering him? If so, talk to his neurologist. My husband has had a couple recently, but they don't really bother him at this point. The first time he mentioned it, he knew it was a hallucination. The second time he didn't, but he accepted it when I told him it wasn't real. He told me he had had a couple of hallucinations before that he didn't tell me about, but again, he knew they weren't real. He doesn't see his neurologist until December, but unless they get worse, we probably won't call. If they become more frequent or bothersome, we'll make an appointment.
Same with the cognition issues. Jim has times when his brain really isn't firing on all cylinders, but they come and go. Some days he's fine. He asked the doctor for help about brain fog and she tried a couple of different meds but they didn't really make a difference and the possible side-effects were pretty drastic so he stopped them. YMMV
