Dry Mouth, Not Enough Saliva

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Memphis, TN

My mouth is very dry, it makes a difference when I eat, and there’s not enough saliva to get my food to the back of my throat. It just sticks to the inside of my mouth, especially my teeth . It’s hard to wash my food down my throat.

I am NEVER WITHOUT WATER 💧
I have it the car, next to me, whatever! My mouth gets so dry my teeth stick to my cheeks 🙄
Hard candy especially helps if you absolutely must. Li1ke when I forget my water 🤦‍♀️ Which is how the hard candy entered the conversation 😆

Dry mouth and insufficient saliva can be a result of difficulty swallowing in Parkinson's disease. Here are some tips to manage this issue:

- Take small sips of drinks and small bites of food.
- Change the thickness or texture of the foods you eat.
- Eat and drink when your medication is most effective, rather than right after you take it or when it wears off.
- Sit up as straight as possible when drinking and eating.
- Reduce distractions like conversations during mealtimes.
- Swallow saliva regularly to control excess saliva or drooling.
- Focus on keeping your mouth closed while eating and drinking.
