That is a really important thing to know.
You are correct Mountain Woman, according to the book, “The PD Companion,” Taking Metamucil and other forms of Psyllium should be avoided by Parkinson patients because they can become hard in the slow gut and can end up making constipation worse instead of better. Parkinson’s Disease affects nerves and muscles in the GI tract, and it takes more time for the stomach to empty and food to move through the intestines.

- My dad died of a bowel blockage at age 95. He took Miralax & nothing happened so he took a second dose right away. It has been my observation that adding fiber such as Citrucel can pile up in the bowel causing a blockage. Better to get the needed fiber by eating reasonable amounts of fruits, vegetables & whole grains. If you regulate your bowel with laxatives & anti-diahrea meds, it quits working on its own. If you sit around all day & don't get any exercise the bowel stops too. 1 dried prune before bed is a good preventive (in addition to the dietary fiber, adequate water & fruit juices & daily exercise). If things get stuck, 1/2 cup of hot prune juice mixed with 1/2 c hot coffee is a quick fix.
Less meds, more action.
