Why Do Parkinsons' Patients Have Frequent UTIs? What Can Be Done?
Pi said this:
People with Parkinson's disease may be at an increased risk for urinary tract infections. This is because Parkinson's can cause changes in the nerves and muscles of the bladder, which can lead to urinary retention (a buildup of urine in the bladder) and other bladder problems.
When urine is retained in the bladder for too long, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria and increase the risk of UTIs. Additionally, some of the medications used to treat Parkinson's can also cause side effects that increase the risk of UTIs, such as dry mouth or constipation.
I googled UTI & Parkinson’s and came up with an article by the Davis Phinney foundation for Parkinson’s that was very helpful. They have a lot of good information.
David doesn’t seem to have this problem but he is usually up a couple of times during the night.
SiggyBishop, you have an excellent answer.
Thank you Siggy
cranberry pills or a shot of cranberry juice (NOT diluted, but 100% no sugar) -- it's worth the expense. As a preventative, take one cranberry or one shot of 100% cranberry juice every other day or every day.
