Balance And Falls

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have low blood pressure and dizziness. I had my 4th fall in 6 months last night. Do you have any suggestions on ways to handle these 2 issues! I am in the mild P.D. place. Thanks!

If you haven’t yet talked to your health care provider, do so. Be very cognizant of those times when your head is level to or below your heart. If so, get to a standing position, slowly and in steps to let the pressure in your brain stabilize before you continue. Be careful and good luck to you. When you do fall analyze what happened step by step

I don't exactly know when, how. or why my sense of balance got shot to smithereens, but it did. Now, I take my life in my hands every time I try to walk across an open space without support. I hated using the walker because it's such an awkward and humiliating contraption; I'm blind in the right eye because I fell and ruptured the eyeball while trying to walk across an asphalt parking lot without the walker. SO ... my advice is to (a) get all the professional help you can with the balance problem, (b) take any prescribed medication you trust faithfully, and (c) -- at all costs -- guard against falling down. At a certain age, falling down is not something you laugh off like you might have done when you were younger. Bones can break, eyeballs can rupture, concussions or other head trauma can occur. Be cheerful, be well, and be careful!

I've had high blood pressure since I was 40. There were times it would really kick up even though I was medicated. By the time I qot to 2017, still undiagnosed it really cranked up. Think autonomic system 🤔 Change meds, add med. Works till it didn't. Hospital time 🙄

SUPRISE!! All this stuff I've been fussing about...yeah, it's Parkinson's.
Now I take 2 BP meds and the Carbadopa/Levodopa also reduces BP as well so now I have to monitor closer to see if another pill can go away. The good news is my circulatory system is enjoying the break! Its the little things 👍

Fluids! Did you know people with Parkinson’s actually FEEL less thirsty? We can’t trust our bodies any more. The dopey meanies (dopamine) that carry the messages around our bodies have all buggered off to the coast….

I was just thinking it could be nOH. I went 14 years before they stopped saying it’s not your heart but we don’t know what’s wrong. Finally an ER doc told me what was wrong. In fact I learned/knew so much about it I was interviewed for 4 hours then recorded a talk which lasted 9minutes but was used to educate medical professionals because it is not often recognized. There are varying ways to treat it but my suggestion is to read up on it so when you talk to you doctor you will be able to tell him the symptoms you experience and also because the complexities of PD make it difficult to educate all doctors about every symptom even if they are movement specialists who aren’t experienced enough. Wearing tight socks (compression hose) is a place to begin. If you can tolerate lots of salt that will help you maintain the hydration. Sleep with your head 4-6 inches elevated and sit up slowly and wait before standing. I fell so many times I think I’m wearing someone else’s face. Blood pressure is difficult to control. I came in here with a hypertensive crisis. My BP was in the 300s systolic. They didn’t give me exact numbers until it was down to 210/110 telling me I was doing better. 😳 But you can go too high laying flat as well. If it is determined to be nOH you might as if a cardiologist might be in order. The answer will depend on how much the neurologist knows or feels comfortable treating. But I wouldn’t wait; it can lead to major injuries if you faint by the tomatoes in a grocery store for instance.
Sorry for my talking so much..
