Could You Share Any Dietary Changes And Tips That Have Helped With Parkinson’s?
I’ve like to eat healthy, I prefer salads, fresh fruit, good, tasting, homemade vegetables. Usually prefer healthy meals, but I won’t but my daily dark chocolate or my dryers slow churned ice cream. I am doing the best I can with my diet, but my chocolate and ice cream are the only two things I have left to enjoy. Having Parkinson’s is bad enough. I’m going to take every last bit of enjoyment I can take.
I am a veterinarian and I (we) do recommend different foods for medical issues. Diabetics- less carbohydrates, some cardiac problems- less sodium.. Geriatrics- smaller more frequent meals, kidney disease- higher quality and less total protein, obesity etc
Now for Parkinson’s disease the protein issue relates to the absorption of medication- dopamine (carbo/levo) from the digestive tract into the blood to get to the brain and help, so if you eat a meal (they usually have protein- eggs, meat, cheese, nuts, beans, fish) the protein present in the gastrointestinal tract reduces the medication that gets in to work. So plan to take dopamine medication at least 30 minutes before eating so it gets a head start to get absorbed before the protein comes along to interfere, or eat a meal, then wait two hours before taking medication (dopamine) so the protein gets absorbed first but then is mostly gone before the medication comes along to be absorbed.
Please remember to throw in a couple of handfuls of walnuts daily
My tip is don't have protein around the time of your meds. It didn't matter for me for a few years and now this year I started taking my morning meds with a yogurt smoothie. So good, but I started feeling so bad. Protein blocks the delivery of levodopa. I've starting following the advice to not eat an hour before and 30 minutes after. It's helping.
I have a smoothie every morning with blueberry, strawberries, raspberries, bananas, avocado dates Almond milk, and sugar. . The smoothie really helps my digestion.!
