Can DBS Surgery Help You With Both Essential Tremors And Parkinson's?

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been blessed with both ET and PD. I'm looking for something that can aid me with both action tremors and at rest tremors. My doctor tells me that there are no medications that work for both. She is reluctant to add more medications because my vital signs are already too low.

I can see how easily Parkinson's can be misdiagnosed as essential tremors.
I developed a essential tremors in my early twenties. Since that time I've seen several neurologists who have confirmed that I have essential tremors. Recently I was diagnosed with Parkinson's at a neurological institute it was definitively diagnosed through various tests and brain scans.

As recently as last week I spoke with my new movement disorder specialist. At that time we spoke about treatments for each, ET and PD. I was prescribed medication for essential tremors, as well as medications for my Parkinson's. I asked that since I was now taking Parkinson's meds would I still need to take my medications prescribed for essential tremors.I was told that because they affect the brain differently, that they need to be treated with different medications.

Thanks Stlane, I have worried about that very thing. I am taking a lot of medications. Besides tremors I've had to battle with bipolar disorder for a number of years.

My new movement disorder specialist has lined me up with the doctor that oversee all of my medications. His purpose is to coordinate with my doctors and be sure that my medications are safe and justified.

Recent research shows that essential tremor heightens your risk of developing Parkinsonism. But developing Parkinsonism does not mean essential tremor is gone. It means you likely have both.

David, you sound like you’re describing my life; essential tremor started when 25, next bipolar, then no one knew what the tremors were just that Sinemet made violently ill. Finally in 2013( after 35 years) a diagnosis of possible Parkinsonism was made and 3 or so years later MSA-C was made but the essential tremor was also included in my diagnosis. I do know that ECT treats both essential tremor and Parkinson tremors. And there is another treatment for depression (I don’t know what it’s called) but it is a treatment for depression but treats tremor also. Talk to your doctor about seeing a psychiatrist. Just a suggestion based on my experience..
