The doctor suggested Metamucil, but it took care of the constipation, but resulted in unformed stools and incontinence.

LIFESAVER!!! Our doctor recommended making the following: 1/2 cup each of applesauce, prune juice, oatbran. Eat a couple of tablespoons each morning. We have been doing this for 3 years now, and constipation has only happened a few times since.

My Mother's doctor explained that metamucil and high fibre diet bulk the stool which may be difficult for those who have lost strength and muscle. He suggested taking 5ml of Duphalac daily, this draws water into the colon and makes stool easier to pass. It made a huge difference. We only give her additional fibre on the occassion when constipation has set in for 2-3 days. Hope this helps.
