Giving Up Or Accepting Limitations?
Lately it seems like I fail at everything, no matter what I try to accomplish. I keep putting myself out there, only to embarrass myself.
Years ago I was a counselor for people with mental illness or addictions. For some time I have wanted to do this again. Locally there is an organization that serves veterans and the homeless..I have been asked if I would be available to work with with families that speak only Spanish. For years I worked with non English speaking Latinos. Spanish was my… read more
I agree with all the great advice you have been given, and I agree with the great advice you have given to others. I think you underestimate yourself. The two groups you have been asked to help are very needy. They really need someone who will listen, care, and act. I think you’re that guy.
Me again. Push those failure memories out of your mind. Think of the times you were successful in counseling. And Happy Birthday this month. There’s the cupcake. 😊

Hello my dear friend. You have so much to offer people David with the gifts God has given you. You have counseled many people with mental challenges and drug addictions. You will be able to connect with the people God sends you in a deeper way because of your own limitations. Be who you are, just as you are. If it were me I would let them know you have Parkinson’s and have some difficulties, but you really have a desire to be of help to them. If you are explaining something and your mind goes blank, be honest. I will say something in jest like “ OK folks, pardon me, having a PD Moment, just flew right out of my head.” Or something of that nature. Trying to hide the PD when it pops it’s head up will only create anxiety. Just be who you are and let them know. I have all the faith in the world in you. You are a good Christian man with a big heart that sounds like it is yearning to be of service again. Don’t let PD steal your self confidence. You have much to give and there are so many people who are struggling and need you. It sounds like God has been working in your heart to use the skills he has given you despite your limitations. Your limitations will unlock hardened hearts and enable them to feel safe with you. You are not inadequate because of your PD. In fact people feel more comfortable with their problems when the person helping them has limitations too. Pray about it and go for it. We will pray for you. God Bless You my friend. Remember, God uses Wounded People to help those who are hurting and need help and none of us feel adequate.
Grace and Peace,

Sometimes the most important thing you can do when helping people is simply to show up. As long as you do that, you haven't failed. You may lose words, but you can still listen, and isn't that 90+% of counseling? If this is something you feel drawn to do, go for it. If you can help one person, you haven't failed.
Your picture and saying are so true!
