Post Surgery Care For Patient Having DBS

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question đź’
Granbury, TX

My husband is considering DBS. We have found information on the device and the surgery. My concern is what care is needed at home after the surgeries. What will be his physical and mental limitations during recovery?

If you need an app for voice amplification, voice booster is a good one (both Google store and Apple store have it), and it's free to install. If that doesn't work, you can always do a search for voice amplification. I found at least 6 apps that are rated 4.6 out of 5 or better, so they come highly recommended.

Post-surgery care for a patient having Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) includes:

- Hospital Stay: Expect to stay in the hospital for less than 24 hours after the second surgery.
- Wound Care: A doctor or nurse will educate you on how to care for your wounds.
- Antibiotics: You will need to take antibiotics to prevent infection while recovering at home.
- Activity Restrictions:
- Avoid light activities such as sex or cleaning the house for the first two weeks.
- Avoid heavier activities such as exercise or most types of work for four to six weeks.
- Follow-up: After a few weeks, visit your neurologist to program and activate your DBS system.
- Device Management: You can turn the device on and off with a magnetic remote control.
- Communication: Stay in close communication with your neurologist to ensure optimal functioning of your DBS.
- Medication: Depending on your condition, you may need to continue taking medication for Parkinson’s symptoms. Never suddenly stop taking medication; consult your neurologist for a plan to taper off gradually to avoid withdrawal.
- Emergency Contact: Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe headaches, fever, chills, blindness, vision changes, or pain, redness, or swelling at your incision sites.

These steps are crucial for a smooth recovery and to maximize the benefits of DBS.

I’ve never had the surgery, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about. You have to work with them after surgery to it properly adjusted.
