Does Anyone Think They Had The "Parkinson's Personality" Of Being Neurotic Years Before PD Diagnosis?
"Neuroticism is the trait disposition to experience negative affects, including anger, anxiety, self‐consciousness, irritability, emotional instability, and depression."
"The analysis found that neuroticism was associated with an 82% higher risk of Parkinson's disease."
By the definition I definitely was neurotic nearly 30 years before my finger taps started and my PD diagnosis. Anxiety, self‐consciousness, emotional instability, and depression were part of me (as a teenager). This is… read more
The only thing I was neurotic about trying to get a nuerologist to believe I was A: I wasn’t a hypochondriac and.B: I wasn’t exaggerating the symptoms and you can get pd in your 40s!!!’
ThunderRoad, What an interesting question and observation. I have professional or scientific basis for my belief but I'm with you. I think the only thing new about PD for me are the motor function issues and the muscle-based symptoms such as incontinence and constipation. The personality and mood based symptoms seem to mine, maybe since birth, but on steroids figuratively.
Thanks for the concept. I'm going to look further into the concept in the literature.

Yes indeed 👍🏼 I was diagnosed with Parkinson's at the age of 38 years old and I am 58 years old now.
By that definition, almost all teenagers are neurotic. At least, American teenagers.
I've had issues with depression and anxiety my whole life. I do not (yet) have Parkinson's. My father did, but I doubt he ever had a problem with self-esteem. My husband is another who has PD but has never had problems with depression and anxiety or low self-esteem. So all in all, I don't think neuroticism would be that helpful a signpost for future neurological problems.
There's so many things that pointed to me developing Parkinson's that I too can't keep up with it. I've always had anxiety, probably neurotic.
How Many Out There Have Parkinsonism? Do You Know The Difference Between Parkinsonism And Parkinson's?
In 3 Mos.my Husbands Neurologist Went From Saying He Was First Steps Of PD To Dementia. This Is In Form Of A Question?
I've Heard Of People Who Were Diagnosed With PD And Years Later Find Out It Wasn't. What Would You Do?
