Skin Issues

Not often mentioned are skin related issues as a symptom of PD. Was my first sign that sonething was amiss. It presented itself as a scalp and upper torso rash of unrelenting nature. Dermatologists (at least 6) have not been helpful except to put me awash with strong external corticosteriods which have not been effective. Any insights to be shared?

Kevdog1. I have been to at least 6 dermatologists in he last 8 years and not a single one of them correctly diagnosed my skin conditions as PD related. The more I study the subject the more convinced that the root of the problem lies in the overproduction of oil from the sebaceous glands in the skin. These glands are most heavily located on the upper torso and scalp (seborrhoeic dermatitis) as well as the folds of the ear. There is a yeast called Malassezia furfur that feeds on the sebum (oil) produced by these glands and causes irritation and inflammation. The autonomic nervous system controls the production of sebum which can become excessive when the autonomic neurons decrease production of dopamine. Dermatologist typically prescribed high potency steroids for the control of the inflammation and anti-fungal shampoos for the scalp issues. i have found neither to address the cause of the problem. I have found that shampooing for 15 minutes a couple of times a week helps the scalp problem somewhat but no cure.

There is never a dull moment with PD. I also break out in rashes and my scalp does itch more. I take a bath in epson salt, and that seems to help me.

JohnRosele: I'm sorry for your PD skin issues. Thankfully that's one PD symptom I've not dealt with. Good luck to you.
I hope this is cleared up quickly and you begin having good days!
