What Dietary Supplements Are Good For Parkinson Disease?

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Fort Myers, FL

I will be 64 next month and have just been diagnosed with Parkinson, I have very minimal symptoms and am on carbidopa/levodopa.

I've started to exercise on a daily basis, walking 5 miles minimum.

I want to change my diet and habits to do everything possible to slow the progression.

Could I get suggestions as to diet, nutritional supplements and other lifestyle changes.

Here are some dietary supplements that may be beneficial for Parkinson's disease:

- Vitamin D: Essential for calcium absorption and bone health. People with Parkinson's have an increased risk for osteoporosis, so maintaining adequate Vitamin D levels is important. Sources include milk, fortified soy milk, and sunlight exposure.
- Calcium: Important for bone health. Sources include milk, fat-free yogurt, dark green vegetables like broccoli and spinach, and fortified juices or soy milk.
- Antioxidants and Phytochemicals: These nutrients might help slow the progression of Parkinson's. Fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in Vitamin C like cantaloupe, citrus, tomatoes, mango, pineapple, and berries, are good sources.

Always consult your doctor before starting any new supplement regimen.
