Tips For Confusion

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am currently working as a caregiver for a man diagnosed with parkinson's. He starts becoming quite confused during late afternoon and early evening. Oftentimes he says there's a dog in the house when there isn't or thinks someone else is in the house. Anyone have any tips on handling the confusion?

- Recognize Delusions: Understand that delusions can mix reality with old memories, TV programs, and fantasy, creating a different kind of reality.
- Monitor Behavior: Be aware that delusions can lead to anxiety, agitation, and unsafe behavior. For example, someone might believe strongly in their delusion, causing stress, trouble eating, or sleeping.
- Ensure Safety: Remove dangerous items that could be misused during delusional episodes, such as objects that might be put into outlets.
- Stay Calm: Try to remain calm and patient, even if the person becomes argumentative or feisty.
