Hi Linda.
Well I would be very careful about buying over the counter hearing aids. I bought one a while back and it was nothing more than a behind the ear amplifier to make everything louder. A hearing aid needs to be tuned to your particular needs. It must conform to your hearing loss curve. If you have low frequency loss then it must make the low frequencies louder while not making the high frequencies louder. And the opposite if your loss is high frequency.
For mild loss and just needed for things like watching TV, over the counter aids may work well. but don't expect too much from any hearing aid. They can not replace your natural hearing.
My dad wore them from the time I was a teenager until his death and I have worn them since about 1980. Nothing beats your natural ears. Be skeptical of claims of "reduces noise in a crowd" or other wonderful claims. It is true that they do some good but not perfect.
Best of luck.
Keep on keeping on.
