Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

My husband is seriously considering this procedure and the whole thing just scares me to death. My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's 15 years ago and I think he's doing relatively well. He does everything on his own. I guess when anyone has a surgery that has to do with their brain, I suppose fear comes into the whole ordeal. I guess I'm being a baby about the whole ordeal but my husband and our marriage is my life. I guess I'm just curious at the success rate and would love to talk to a… read more

I Had DBS surgery in Sept of 2017 @ UW. Has your husband gone through all the test to see if he is a candidate for this surgery. You have to make sure you have a neuor-surgeon and a neurologist that you feel comfortable with. I'm glad I did it! I am taking minimal meds and my tremors are gone. I am doing basically everything I did before being diagnosed with PD.

I had DBS September 2017. No regrets. Diagnosed 12 years ago at age 45. Had bad dyskensia in my right foot and leg. Spent half my day unable to walk normally. Now I can walk normally, my tremor is gone and I hardly take any medication. Be patient though.

I had the surgery on a Monday and was home the next day. I went back in 6 weeks to have the stimulator turned on, It is only turned on a very low stimulation at first so that your brain gets used to it. They told me I probably wouldn't feel a difference, and I didn't. It took a few sessions to get it working good, Now it is working great and I only take 1/2 a sinemet a day.

My husband had the DBS surgery in August, 2017 and it was definitely worth it! He is on decreased medication and no longer has “freezing spells.” He has had a bout with anxiety but he also suffers with “drop foot” and arthritis. Thankful for what he still can do!
