Does Anyone Have Spasms In Their Chest Muscles Or Esphagus With Their PD?

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Saginaw, MI

I get chest pain when my sinemet wears off. I had a scoping a year ago and my doctor said that my esophagus was going into spasms. I am wondering if this is due to PD or digestive issues, My neurologist said that the esophagus has dopamine receptors.

Before I got Parkinson's, I had terrible gastric reflux. I discovered that chewing on some sagebrush leaves or drinking sagebrush tea fixed it immediately. Not the same plant as cooking sage. More later on my Profile - I want to look up pictures for you. I can find it easily in Montana - not so easy in Michigan. Perhaps a healthfood store? Alternate name: wormwood. Use the leaves, I haven' tried the wood

Hi @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member I have Acid Reflux that sounds a lot like the pain and discomfort your are discribing. The esophageal spasm are usually the result of another condition such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or achalasia. Achalasia is a problem with the nervous system in which the muscles of the esophagus and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) don't work properly. Anxiety or panic attacks can also cause similar symptoms. I had a Doctor suggest keeping a diary and record what you eat, when and how long before you have symptoms show up. It is worth a try. Good Luck. Blessings, Ann

Hi Janet: My husband had severe digestive issues before the Parkinsons was diagnosed.....esophogitus, gastroenteritis, diverticulosis and itis, which he takes all kinds of medication for. Is the Parkinsons connected to any of it? Are people with Parkinsons more prone to digestive issues? Most likely yes to both of those questions as Parkinsons is impacting all the nerves in the body and nerves control all of our functions. Patty is having a stomach emptying study to make sure her food ids digesting properly...another very common issue with Parkinsons. My husband had that test a couple of times. Eating slowly, not eating right before bedtime, taking meds prescribed for the esophogus and other issues, eating the right food, and trying not to stress too much will help.

Sorry to hear that. The only chest problem, not really pain ,but a more rapid heart rate it seemed , when my dopamine level was too high.
