Is Flying Overseas Still Viable?
I am accustomed to traveling quite a bit, especially since retiring in January of this year. Diagnosed with PD 2 months ago. I am booked to fly to Italy next Spring for a 10 day, guided group tour with daily early starts, typically lots of walking, some bus rides, late evening dinners. As much as I was looking forward to it, I am beginning to fear that it will not be feasible. May become too stiff on the flight & unable to sleep. May be unable to get to the bathroom quickly. May be unable to get… read more
I was diagnosed last May 2016 and a few months later took a five-day driving vacation. A month later I took a four-day plane trip. My only real problem was what to do late at night in my hotel room when insomnia kept me awake. There is only so much TV you can watch at 4am. I also only had to get up early two of the nine days total I was gone. Otherwise, both trips went okay and I'm planning another three-day plane trip this March and one in May. So I encourage you to go to Italy and enjoy yourself! As for your early starts, hopefully you can nap later in the day or just skip one or two of the early morning starts and catch up to your group later.
I believe that we the PD'er should not limit ourselves in the enjoyment of life, especially travel. My suggestion is to let the airline know ahead of time that we have a disability. I traveled abroad, last year. I was diagnosed for about 4 years with PD and already had balance problems. The airline provided me with a wheelchair with an airport staff to wheel me around from, the airport security area to the boarding area and was the first one into the plane but the last one to disembark. The same with hotel reservation, it is important to let the hotel reservation office know that we need a handicap room.
"I often travel on a plain to visit my brother I book help for when I arrive at the airport I am then taken by chair to the plain and air hostess makes sure I am collected when the plain lands I am then delivered to my waiting brother this makes traveling less worrying and I arrive relaxed there is alway someone to help don't be afraid to ask . Hope you enjoy your break hugs
I've gone on two three trips since my dx six months and my biggest problem was what two do in a confined hotel room when I couldn't sleep late at night. During the first trip I walked around the hotel, hung out in the lobby watching TV, etc. The 2nd and 3rd trips went much smoother.
