I agree with many of the others tell them right away but be honest and have some printed pamphlets for them to read about Parkinsons. I have found that small pamphlets like the ones in the waiting room at your Dr;s office are best. A quick read is usually more "friendly" to the readers..I added a little humor when I announced my diagnosis, like "I am in good company Michael J Fox. MOhamad Ali (at the time he was alive) and the last Pope. That seemed to help everyone relax a little. Remember it is difficult for them too. I think it is good to explain to them that some days will be good while other daYS will be difficult for you and that the frequent changing of strong medications may change your demeanor Those are the isssues I found were very hard for the on lookers to understand. A little "Heads up" would be helpful to them.

I like FernDeatherage"s answer and I suggest having a really good concise article for them to read if they want to know. I so agree that you need to tell them that you will have many good years and that there are many medications that help. You can, at this time or in the near future let them know that you will need their help from time to time so they know they can be helpful deal with PD and that you will ask. Best of luck to you for finding the right words for you to share the news, I know you will and you will feel so much better after, I suggest that uyou don't procrastinate!

Hi, It is hard to tell a loved one that we have PD but I think that we have to be honest about it. I think the saying "Honesty is the best policy" applies to this dilemma When you tell your loved ones about this illness, i think that you will feel better. For your and your loved one's information about PD, there are a lot of info.on the internet. Just search for Parkinson Disease. Hope this help. God Bless.
