Sinemet Question

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Tillsonburg, ON

Is it possible to develop new side effects after taking Sinemet for a couple months? Started in Feb.low dose, gradually increased and was stable and all good. Now, I have had a continuous headache for a month (I mean NEVER goes away) and become nauseous after my second dose every day. Been to my family doc, had CT scan, eyes tested etc. I think it is the sinemet, is that possible?

I take Protonix 40mg, every day to prevent excess stomach acid and heartburn since I had my Gallbladder and Appendix removed about 15 years ago, and been taking Protonix 40mg ever since, because it is now more difficult for my stomach process greasy foods..... Ever since those minor surgeries, I haven't had a bit of trouble.... and no acid reflux up my esophagus.... If and when on occasion over due fried food, just taking a Zantac 150mg, provides immediate relief for me..... Alan

Hello AnnEngell,
I've been taking sinemat for 6 months now. The side effects come and go with me. Theres days when i can't even keep the pills down because of vomiting and other days i'm fine. Haven't figured out the why of it yet. I doubt this will help. Sorry.

I found that when I reduced the amount of BP (blood pressure) meds by 50% my headache went away in 8 hours, and have never come back.... DO you take any BP meds? Also you need to check your BP Pressure twice.... Once standing and Again while sitting.... Hope this helps both of you Alan

I hope I have a simple answer for you.... First what ratio of C/L are you taking ? "1 to 4" or "1 to 10" ???

Second, do you now or have you taken medication for your BP ?? Sinemet and several other similar PD meds have the side effect of effecting ones BP... With PD, you should now always have your BP taken twice... Once sitting and again for a Second time standing... When one has Parkinson's there typically a fairly significant differences between the 2 blood pressure measurements taken.

For me... I started almost 4 years ago taking 9 tabs of Sinemet 25/100mg and 3 tabs of Comtan 200mg, after being diagnosed with Stage 3 PD... and within a month or so noticed I was getting light headed, dizzy, and all over sweating like crazy... within 12 hours of reducing my BP meds by 50% (half) that feeling immediately went away....

3 years later, my MDS / PD Specialist thought I could improve my Quality of Life increased my dosage by 30%... So now I'm taking 12 tabs of [[treatment:Sinemet:55d551c11fcaa39f0e[[phone:000079]] 25:]]/100mg and 4 tabs of Comtan with outstanding results... But... about 2 weeks after increasing my dosage... I started getting headaches in the center of my forehead, after a couple of weeks, I decided to quite taking the other half of my BP.....

And those ... headaches disappeared like magic, while maintaining my 120/80 BP.... But when I went for a check up to my MDS/PD Specialist. by the time I got to see him my BP climbed to 185/95...

So I went back to my PCP/Family Doc, and he suggested adding back the "water pill" portion of the BP meds I had previously taken... So I added back HTCZ 25mg....

Now better then ever at 110/80 with no issues at all ! Hope this might help you... Alan

PS In over ~15 years of being challenged with PD, I feel much better now thanks to Sinemet - The Gold Standard for treatment of PD, my Specialist has several of his PD patients taking over +30 tabs a day with excellent results...

No, I never seemed to have problems with my stomach rejecting Sinemet....

Do you have problems with your stomach in general? I found Zantac 150mg is the fastest way to settle an upset stomach.... I had my gallbladder removed over 10 years ago, and at times I'm sensitive to eating fatty food, which would give me fits, but just taking one Zantac 150mg, problem gone in less then a hour !

Between PD meds, other meds, and supplements - I take close to 40 pills, and feel fantastic... without the stiffness and regular ache & pain from the moment my eyes open, until they close 16 hours later... no problems at all.... Works great for me.... Alan
