Question For Canadians On CPP - Do You Receive A Disability Benefit Due To PD ?

A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭
Regina, SK

I am retired and turning 60 this year and will be receiving CPP benefits. Not sure what the disability benefit is but it sounds like a long drawn out process to apply and be assessed. The disability needs to be severe and prolonged. I am in the early stages and was diagnosed after I retired. Just wondering if other Canadians out there with PD have gone through this and if you would recommend it.

I can't get disability because I worked for the state and we paid into a state pension fund. The only way I could get it is if I were to get a divorce. My husband makes more than is allowed.

In the United States I put in for disability about 18 months ago and did qualify, then when I turned 66 I automatically went to social security. Is this the way it worked for everyone else?

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member that is exactly what I was thinking. I am way better now that I am on meds but when I think back to how I was without meds (prior to diagnosis) that is a place I hope to never go back to. It scares me when I hear that the meds eventually stop working and when that happens I will no longer qualify for the disability benefit because one of the requirements is that you have not received retirement benefits. And when the meds no longer work and I am stiff and shakey again - that is when I will need the benefit.

I think if you are going to try for disability you should stop all your meds that you can safely and then see about help. if you take your meds and they help some they say you are not disabled enough.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member thanks for your answer. I am a Canadian citizen. I applied for CPP and received notice that I have been approved. With this notice was a document that indicated "I may be eligible for a disability benefit". This would be in addition to the retirement pension. I visited their website and its very confusing, the process takes approx 4 months of assessments. Still not sure what I will do but I agree with you that it will be a frustrating experience. Thanks again.
