Overview
Xadago is a prescription drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an add-on medication to treat Parkinson’s disease. Xadago is indicated for people who are taking levodopa/carbidopa but having “off” episodes wherein their Parkinson’s symptoms increase. Xadago is also known by its drug name, safinamide.

Xadago is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Xadago is believed to work by increasing the amount of dopamine in the brain.

How do I take it?
Xadago comes in tablet form.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Xadago lists common side effects including insomnia, nausea, falling, and uncontrolled involuntary movements.

Rare but serious side effects listed for Xadago include eye problems, uncontrolled movements, falling asleep during daily activities, hallucinations or other psychosis, unusual urges, and serotonin syndrome, which may be life-threatening.
