ANTIPARKINSONIAN AGENT
Overview
Osmolex ER is an extended-release formulation of amantadine that is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as stiffness, tremors, and shaking. It is also prescribed to control movement problems caused by certain medications used to treat Parkinson’s disease. However, Osmolex ER is not specifically approved to treat “off” episodes (times when other Parkinson's medications wear off), which is a use reserved for other amantadine formulations. Osmolex ER is also known by its drug name, amantadine.
Amantadine, the active ingredient in Osmolex ER, is thought to work by increasing dopamine (a chemical messenger in the brain) availability and reducing excitatory signals that can lead to unwanted movements. This dual action may help improve motor control and reduce symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Osmolex ER is taken orally, usually as a once-daily extended-release tablet in the morning. Dosage may be increased weekly based on individual response and tolerance. It is important to swallow the tablet whole without chewing, crushing, or dividing it. Osmolex ER should be taken exactly as prescribed by a health care provider.
Side effects
Common side effects of Osmolex ER include nausea, dizziness or lightheadedness, and insomnia.
Rare but serious side effects may include severe drowsiness that could lead to falling asleep during daily activities, depressed mood or suicidal thoughts, hallucinations or psychotic behavior, orthostatic hypotension (dizziness when standing), fever and confusion if the drug is suddenly discontinued, and impulse control issues like increased gambling or other compulsive behaviors.
