Step In Shower / Bath Tub
Has anyone gotten one of those walk in tub or showers that have a seat? If so, has it helped?
I just need more guard rails along the side of the bathroom walls and also in the shower.
I had a bath chair but switched to a bench. It goes over the side of the tub. I sit and swing my legs over the side of the tub and use a hand held shower head. The bench is perpendicular to the tub.
The year before I was diagnosed, we got a Bathfitter shower insert to replace the bathtub. We had them include two grab bars (permanently attached to the studs). Instead of shower door we opted for shower curtain, because I remember how much easier it was to push aside the curtain when helping my mom shower (she had PD, too). Pricey but they did it in one day and did a great job. There is a lip of about 3-4 inches to step over, but much easier than stepping over the side of a tub. I could have had a seat installed, but prefer my free-standing seat. I've heard people talk about the suction cup grab bars but they just aren't as safe. I love the grab bars and being able to remove the shower head from the wall to use it if I sit down. I am much safer and able to shower on my own (and I like being as independent as I can).
Interesting you posted this question. We are in the process of having a house built. We know we want a big roll in shower (no step) with a seat. For us, that is a must have. We have been discussing what type of bath tub, or even not having a bath tub, in the master bath. We both use a shower more than a bath tub.
We also are considering a sauna. They can be purchased "self contained". We have enjoyed out hot tub for years, but my husband has been having increasing difficulty getting in and out of the hot tub. We hope a sauna will help with the muscle tightness and cramps.
We currently have a bidet add-on to our toilet. We plan to get another for the new house as we both think it is great.
I would be very interested in hearing what other PDs have in their bathrooms. Or what they would dream of.
